What to Keep in Your Car for Safety
(Because the side of the road is not where you want to figure things out)
We spend a lot of time thinking about safety in controlled environments the range, training classes, structured settings.
But real life doesn’t always look like that. One of the most vulnerable places you can find yourself is on the side of the road.
Where This Came From
This didn’t come from me learning the hard way.
It came from an Harrison at Double Tap Coalition and Kevin Dixie with No Other Choice. It stuck with me because it was simple, practical, and something most people don’t think about until they need it.
Self-defense isn’t just about what you carry.
It’s about how prepared you are when something unexpected happens.
What You Should Have in Your Car
Flashlight (Preferably Hands-Free)
A flashlight is basic, but a headlamp is better.
Being able to keep both hands free while you’re dealing with your car, your surroundings, or anything else makes a difference.
Amplified Ear Protection
This isn’t just for the range.
Amplified ear pro lets you hear what’s around you , cars approaching, people nearby, even movement you wouldn’t normally pick up.
If you’re on the side of the road, especially at night or in a more isolated area, being able to hear before you see something matters.
It gives you an extra layer of awareness you don’t usually think about.
Emergency Flares / Glow Sticks
Visibility matters.
Glow sticks are simple, but effective.
Pro tip: put one inside a water bottle, it spreads the light and makes you easier to see.
Reflective Triangle
This is one of the easiest ways to make sure other drivers see you before they get too close.
Set it up behind your vehicle and give yourself space.
Know Your Location
No signal doesn’t mean you’re lost.
Make sure you’re paying attention to mile markers and different things as you travel. It will make it a lot easier for you to tell authorities or someone’s who is coming to help where you’re located.
Knowing where you are can make all the difference if you need help.
Portable Charger / Power Bank
Your phone is your lifeline.
Dead battery = no GPS, no calls, no location sharing.
Keep it charged or have a backup ready.
OBD Emergency Tools
There are small devices that plug into your car’s OBD port that can help with tracking or signal support.
It’s one of those things you don’t think about… until you need it.
Gloves
Protect your hands if you’re dealing with your car, debris, or anything sharp.
You don’t want an injury on top of everything else.
Key Placement
Put your keys on top of the driver-side rear tire.
It sounds small, but it keeps you from dropping them, losing them, or wasting time looking for them when you don’t have it to waste.
First Aid Kit
Because small situations can turn serious fast.
Having something on hand is better than having nothing.
Rechargeable Jump Starter & Tire Pressure Gauge
A dead battery or low tire pressure can leave you stuck longer than necessary.
Having a rechargeable jump starter means you don’t have to rely on someone else to get moving again.
Pair that with a tire air compressor so you can check and manage your tires on the spot.
It’s about reducing how long you stay in a vulnerable position.
Zip Ties
Simple. Easy. Useful.
They can hold things together long enough to get you home or out of a situation.
Personal Protection
Depending on your comfort level and your local laws, having a means of protection can matter in a vulnerable situation like this.
The key is being trained, responsible, and aware.

Final Thought
Preparation doesn’t have to be complicated.
But it does have to be intentional.
Because when something unexpected happens, what you have and what you know are crucial.
If you’re building your own setup, start simple and build from there.
I’ll be sharing more breakdowns like this over on Instagram @rangeready_e and adding more to the blog as I go.
Preparation is part of self-defense. 🎯
