Ever stared at a box of ammo and felt overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Two of the most common labels you’ll see are FMJ ( Full Metal Jackets) an HP (Hollow Point). They both send lead downrange, but they are built for different jobs. This post breaks it down plain and useful
What is FMJ ( Full Metal Jacket)?
Short answer: the go-to practice round.
What is it:
- Lead core wrapped in a metal jacket.
- The nose is smooth meaning no cavity.
How it behaves:
- Penetrates deeply and doesn’t expand.
- Less expensive| perfect for high-volume practice.
Use when: range practice, drills, and plinking where over-penetration is controlled by range rules.
What is Hollow Point (HP)?
Short answer: it is designed to stop.
What it is:
Has a cavity at the tip that encourages expansion on soft impact. Some modern HPs use polymer tips or bonding for reliable performance.
How it behaves:
Expands (mushrooms) on soft targets, transferring more energy and reducing the chance of exiting the target. Intended for self-defense/domestic scenarios where over-penetration is a concern.
Use when: personal defense, home defense (where legal and appropriate).
How they’re made — real quick, no chemistry class
FMJ: lead core → copper jacket drawn over it → swaged to shape. Smooth nose = clean feeding.
HP: same core & jacket process, but the nose is formed with a cavity (and sometimes a tip insert) to control expansion.
That small design change = big difference in how the bullet acts on impact.
How I test ammo.
Use the same gun & sight setup for every test. 3 groups of 5 rounds at a set distance (7 or 15 yards). 30-round function test (feed, extract, eject). Log lot numbers and results. Always test carry ammo in your exact gun before trusting it.

Bottom line
FMJ = your range buddy. Cheap, predictable, great for drills.
HP = your defensive tool. Designed to expand and reduce over-penetration.
Neither is “wrong” they just serve different jobs. Pick the right tool for the task and always test your chosen loads in your firearm.
